Orange County - Chapel Hill, Hillsborough

Wake County - Raleigh, Cary, Apex

Chatham County - Pittsboro

ABOUT CERTIFIED COPIES:

If the bride is going to change her last name, she will need one certified copies of your completed marriage license. If she has a passport she will need to change, I suggest you get 2 certified copies. They are $10 each. Wake County Register of Deeds will give you a small request slip when you get your license. Fill out the request and make out your personal check to Register of Deeds for the total amount. Place your check and the request in the envelope with your marriage license that you will give me at your rehearsal. After your wedding, I will have your two witnesses sign the license and bring it home with me and complete my part and sign it. Then I will mail it in to the Register of Deeds with your check and request. (Johnston and Orange County Registers of Deeds require cashier's checks so I cannot send in a request for you to these counties.)

After the Register of Deeds has recorded your marriage they will mail your certified copies to you. You will need to take one certified copy to the Social Security office to change your name. They will scan it in and give it back to you. Then take it to the DMV to change your name on your drivers’ license. They will scan in your certified copy and give it back to you. Social Security and DMV will not accept photocopies. If you have a passport, you will need to mail in your certified copy to get your name changed for that. I suggest you keep the other original certified copy at home in your files to photocopy for those wanting proof of marriage but don’t require an original.

Also remember that if either of you is going on the other’s health insurance, you have only 30 days from your wedding date to notify the health insurance carrier of your change in dependents. Marriage is a “qualifying event” that will allow you to make this change mid-period. If you miss this time frame, you will have to wait until the next enrollment period to add a dependent.
