ABOUT CERTIFIED COPIES:

If the bride is going to change her last name, she will need at least 3 certified copies of your completed marriage license. If she has a passport she will need to change, I suggest you get 4 certified copies. A certified copy is $10 each. Some counties provide a request form or you may be able to download one from their website. Some counties will accept personal checks while others require a cashier's check or cash. If your county accepts a personal check, then Reverend LeeAnn can send it in along with the completed license.

After the Register of Deeds has recorded your marriage they will mail your certified copies to you if you have requested them and have completed a request form and your check. You will need to take one original to the Social Security office to change your name. Take another original one to the DMV to change your name on your drivers’ license. Social Security and DMV will not accept photocopies and do not return your certified copy. If you have a passport, you will need another certified copy to get your name changed for that. Keep the last original certified copy at home in your files to photocopy for those wanting proof of marriage but don’t require an original.

Also remember that if either of you is going on the other’s health insurance, you have only 30 days from your wedding date to notify the health insurance carrier of your change in dependents. Marriage is a “qualifying event” that will allow you to make this change mid-period. If you miss this time frame, you will have to wait until the next enrollment period to add a dependent.
